Projects
associated with Climate
Forecast Applications encompass
a series of forecasting schemes for precipitation and flood warning
for the monsoon Asia region. The schemes cover short (1-10 days),
medium (15-30 days) and long term (1-6 months) time periods.
The initial project, Climate
Forecast Applications in Bangladesh (CFAB) is
comprised of forecasting the discharges from the Ganges and Brahmaputra
rivers
into Bangladesh and the subsequent modelling of the rainfall associated
with the monsoon season on a sub-seasonal time scale. The forecast
ouput is then disseminated within the community involved in agricultural
practices, disaster mitigation and water resource management .
Other similar projects
extending into the South Asia region include:
- CFAM The 20-25
day forecast scheme and its application to real problems is applied
over a wider geographical
domain.
- CFASA One
of the
key tasks in operational meteorology in the tropics is to forecast
the timing and strength of the summer monsoon. This question of monsoon
prediction is being readdressed in light of recent research findings.
There is now more emphasis on the intraseasonal nature of the
monsoon system.
